Reduce your energy bills By Switching to a Cheaper Supplier with the Quote Chief Energy Bill Comparison Tool

Energy bills have a tendency to increase over time unless you are on a fixed term tariff your energy bills will vary according to the wholesale rate. Why should you be paying more for the same gas and electricity that all suppliers provide?

In order to keep your bills low, it is important to review your current tariff at least once or twice a year. Quote Chief have a special tool that can compare your current tariff with a wide range of energy providers for both single and dual tariffs. All you need to do is fill in is your address as well as your current provider and tariff, it also helps if you have a current bill to hand for a more accurate comparison or you can put your estimated usage in.

Shall I switch to a fixed or variable tariff?

A fixed tariff is usually for a minimum period of 12 months, during which your energy rates are fixed and will not go up or down with wholesale rates. Fixed term rates are usually a little higher than a variable tariff but you have the added protection against any big increases. Some people like to have the best of both worlds and fix on an 18 month or 24 month period so if energy prices do come down by the time their fixed term ends they can switch after their term is over.

One thing to be careful of on a fixed term is that there are usually exit fees associated with them which means that you will be charged a fee if you decide to switch provider before the fixed term is over. There is a small selection of providers that do not charge an exit fee for leaving before the fixed term is up but you need to check these details carefully.

Am I better off on a single or dual tariff?

Most providers do offer cheaper tariffs if you take both gas and electricity from them.

How do I pay my Gas and Electricity Bills?

You usually have a choice of how to pay your bills, you can either pay them when you receive your bill or set up a standing order or direct debit. It is usual for suppliers to offer a small discount if you set up a direct debit with them.

Shall I get a smart meter?

With a smart meter, your usage is automatically tracked without the need for meter readings so you are always paying for exact usage. There will be no more need for energy providers to use estimated readings so you won’t be overpaying because of that. You will also be able to see your energy usage on a display provided by the supplier. You can also now choose to switch back to a normal meter within 2 years of getting a smart meter if you do change your mind or don’t think you are benefitting from having one.

What does the new energy cap mean?

At the end of 2018, Ofgem, the energy regulator in the UK, introduced a price cap on gas and electricity for customers on standard tariffs. As it stands, the caps are 17p per kWh on electricity and 4p per kWh on gas.

The caps will be reviewed in February by Ofgem and then adjusted in April and October this year if needed. Ofgem will review what effect the cap has had on customers in 2020 and decide on whether to continue with the cap or end it.

Customers who have joined on a fixed tariff aren’t affected by the cap. Even though the cap is in place and you are on a standard tariff, it is likely that you will be able to save money by shopping around using comparison sites. You can use Quote Chief Energy Comparison tool here.
