What insurance do I need to get my car out of impound?

If your car has been impounded by the police, you’re going to be in a hurry to get it back as soon as possible. It’s already costing you a fortune in penalties and impound fees, plus you rely on your car for getting from A to B and will be stuck without it. It’s important to make sure that you have everything in order, or you could end up wasting your time and spending even more money.

To get your car out of the impound you need to have a specialised insurance policy. If you try to collect your car without the right cover, you won’t get your car back and the impound will continue to charge you penalties for storing it.

Do you require insurance to release an impounded car?

If your vehicle has been seized, you’ll need to produce proof that you have impounded car insurance in order for it to be released. You must take your insurance certificate with you as evidence that an insurance policy is in place, so choose an insurer that can e-mail a copy of your policy documents to you immediately.

In most cases, an insurance related offence is the reason that a vehicle has been impounded in the first place. So, it may not be surprising that you must show evidence of insurance before your car will be released to you.

What insurance do I need to release an impounded car?

Unfortunately you can’t just take out the cheapest insurance policy and expect to be able to get your impounded car back as most insurance policies just don’t cover impounded cars. To be able to collect your car, you’ll need to make sure that your policy offers the right kind of cover. The pound will be unable to release your vehicle unless your insurance policy meets specific requirements.

For your car to be released, your insurance policy wording must specifically state that it covers impounded vehicles. Most insurance policies tend to state they do no not offer this cover, but even if your policy doesn’t mention impounded vehicles at all, it will not be accepted.

Your insurance policy must also have at least 30 days cover remaining when you go to collect your car. Because of this a lot of temporary insurance policies aren’t sufficient, as most only offer 28 days of cover.

How do I get my car out of the impound?

It’s not only the correct type of insurance policy that’s important, there are several other documents that you must take with you to collect your impounded car. Without the proper documents, it won’t matter what kind of insurance policy you have as you won’t be able to retrieve your vehicle.
